I'm a big believer in vision board journaling. And why is that? Well, before you start cutting out magazine pictures or pinning things on Pinterest, you need to get clear on what you're actually reaching for.

And journaling is a fantastic way to do that!

If you've been thinking about creating a vision board, or if you want to go deeper with the one you already have, these journal ideas and tips will help you dream bigger, get specific, and turn your vision into something real.

Why Vision Board Journaling Works

Vision boards are powerful, but they're even more powerful when you've taken the time to think deeply about what goes on them.

Here's what vision board journaling does for you...

You can't create a meaningful vision board if you're not clear on what you want. Journaling helps you sift through the noise and figure out what actually matters to you.

It helps you uncover your real desires. Sometimes I think I want something because it sounds good or because everyone else is doing it.

Sound familiar?

But when you write, you get honest with yourself about what you truly want, not what you think you should want. See the difference?

It makes your vision super specific. "I want to be successful" is vague. "I want to build a business that gives me freedom to work from home and spend more time with my kids" is specific. Journaling helps you get there.

It also builds belief. The more you write about your vision, the more real it becomes in your mind. And when you believe it's possible, you're way more likely to take action.

And no, vision board journaling isn't just merely dreaming. Anyone can dream! You get the chance to design the life you want to live and give yourself permission to go after it.

So…What Exactly Is Vision Board Journaling?

It's simple! Vision board journaling is writing out your dreams, goals, and desires before you create your vision board.

Instead of jumping straight to images and motivational quotes, you take time to reflect on what you want in different areas of your life. You explore why those things are meaningful to you. You get specific about what success looks like. You dream without limits!

Some people use prompts to guide their thinking. Some people free-write. Some people break it down by life category. For example, career, relationships, health, finances, personal growth, etc.

The point is to get everything out of your head and onto paper (or a digital journal) so you can see it, refine it, and then turn it into a visual representation that keeps you motivated.

Different Ways to Approach Vision Board Journaling

Just like there's no one right way to create a vision board, there's no one right way to journal about it. Here are a few approaches you can try…

1. Category-Based Vision Journaling

This is where you break your life into categories and write about your vision for each one.

Not sure where to start? Some common categories might include career, relationships, health, finances, personal growth, home, travel, hobbies, spirituality, and so on.

For each category, you write about what you want to create, achieve, or experience.

It's like a checklist so that you're tapping into all areas of your life, not just the ones that might seem urgent right now.

2. Future-Self Vision Journaling

This approach has you write as if you're already living your dream life. You describe a day in the life of your future self in vivid detail.

I want you to really spend time with this.

What does your morning look like?

Where are you living?

What work are you doing?

Who are you spending time with?

What activities fill your evenings?

It works because it helps you visualize your goals in a way that feels real and tangible.

3. Prompt-Based Vision Journaling

If you're not sure where to start, journal prompts give you a framework. They ask specific questions that help you dig deeper into what you want and why you want it.

Here’s an example for you. "What would I do if I knew I couldn't fail?" or, "What does my ideal life look like one/two/five years from now?"

These kinds of prompts guide your thinking and help you explore angles you might not have considered on your own. It prompts you to think!

4. Free-Flow Dream Journaling

This is where you just write whatever comes to mind. No structure, no rules. Just you and all of your dreams.

You might start with "If I could design my life exactly how I wanted..." and see where it takes you.

This journaling technique is free-flow because it gives you total freedom to dream without worrying about being practical or realistic. No limits!

How to Start a Regular Practice of Journaling

Notice that I said practice. That means you don't have to get it perfect, nor do you have to do this every single day. But I’m a firm believer in revisiting your vision regularly so that you know what you're working toward.

Would you drive across the country without reference a map every know and then? I'd say probably not! The same applies to your vision board.

Here's some tips to make it a habit...

Schedule it. Block out time once a week, once a month, or even once a quarter to sit down and journal about your vision. Treat it like an important meeting with yourself.

Keep your journal visible. Don't shove it in a drawer. Leave it somewhere you'll see it and be reminded to use it.

Pair it with your vision board updates. Every time you update your vision board, spend some time journaling first. It'll keep your board on track with where you're headed.

Give yourself permission to dream. I know it can be tempting, but please don't edit yourself. By that I mean don't worry about how you'll make it happen.

Just write what you want! The how comes later.

The more you practice vision board journaling, the clearer your path becomes.
