Who said that Valentine's Day has to be candlelit dinners for two and overpriced roses? Not me!
In fact, some of the best Valentine's outings I've been to had nothing to do with romance and everything to do with getting your favorite people together for a night of pure fun.
Even if you're happily coupled up, blissfully single (…or somewhere in between…), throwing a Valentine's Day party for your adult friends is the move. It takes the pressure off and brings people together.
Plus you have an excuse to dress up and drink something pink!
So grab your favorite planning notebook because I'm going to walk you through seven party ideas that I think are way more fun than fighting for a restaurant reservation.
1. Valentine’s Brunch Party
A late-morning Valentine's party with your besties, bottomless mimosas, and all the brunch food you can handle. Talk about pure perfection.
How to Do It
Go full pastel and pretty here. For colors use blush pink, soft lavender, and cream tones. Set your table with mismatched vintage plates if you have them, fresh flowers in small vases, and cloth napkins tied with ribbon. If you're hosting outdoors (lucky you), string up some lights and set out throw blankets.
You can create a mimosa bar with different fruit juices, fresh berries, and flavored simple syrups so everyone can customize their drinks.
For food, do a waffle or pancake bar with fun toppings like whipped cream, chocolate chips, and fresh fruit. Yummy!
PRO TIP: set up a mini gift station where everyone can grab a small treat to take home, like mini bottles of champagne, homemade sugar scrubs, or cute candles.
2. Murder Mystery Dinner Party
Ok, hear me out. What's more fun than solving a fake crime with your friends while dressed in costume (and perhaps slightly tipsy)? A Valentine's Day-themed murder mystery dinner takes the holiday and turns it into an interactive experience.
How to Do It
Choose your mystery theme first, then pick your decor around it. If it's set in the 1920s, go full Gatsby with gold accents, art deco patterns, and feather centerpieces. For a modern mystery, keep it sleek with dramatic lighting and contemporary table settings.
Set the mood with dim lighting and candles (real or LED) on every surface. Create character name cards for each place setting and leave "clues" scattered around your space as decor.
Serve dinner in courses to keep the mystery unfolding throughout the night, and have a signature cocktail that ties into your theme.
3. Wine and Design Night
This is basically a paint-and-sip, but make it Valentine's themed and way more personal. Set up canvases, paints, and brushes, pour the wine, and let everyone's inner artist come out to play. No judgment, no competition, just creative fun.
How to Do It
Cover your tables with butcher paper or plastic tablecloths (trust me on this, wine + paint can get messy). Set up individual painting stations with all the supplies laid out, and create a little inspiration board with Valentine's-themed images everyone can reference if they want.
Since it’s an activity-focused party, go light and airy with your decor. Simple white or cream table settings with pops of color from fresh tulips or ranunculus.
Keep the food basic, like a grazing table with crackers, cheese, fruit, chocolates. Basically things that won't require a lot of attention.
Play some chill background music, pour generously, and watch the personalities come out on canvas. At the end of the night, everyone has a unique piece to take home.

4. Decade Theme Party
Pick your favorite decade and go all in. You have so many to choose from! Groovy '70s, neon '80s, grunge '90s, or early 2000s nostalgia.
How to Do It
This is where you can get super creative with thrift store finds and DIY decor. For an '80s party, you can get metallic streamers, neon signs, cassette tapes as decor, and a great playlist. Set up a backdrop with decade-appropriate props for photos (e.g., inflatable boom boxes, old phones, vintage magazines).
Encourage everyone to dress up, and maybe even have a prize for best costume. Create different zones, like a dance floor with appropriate lighting, a lounge area with period-appropriate furniture or blankets, and a photo area where people can snap photos.
5. Cocktail Competition Party
Turn your friends into amateur mixologists for the night. Everyone brings ingredients for their signature cocktail, and you all get to taste and vote on the best one. It's interactive, and you get to try a bunch of different drinks without having to make them all yourself!
How to Do It
Set up a full bar area with all the tools people might need…shakers, strainers, muddlers, nice glassware, and plenty of ice. Create a judging scorecard for each cocktail with categories like taste, presentation, and creativity. Use clipboards and little pencils to make it official and fun.
For decor, display all the liquor bottles nicely, add some fresh herbs and citrus fruits, and set up proper lighting so people can see what they're doing. String up some Edison bulbs or use table lamps to create that speakeasy vibe.
Have plenty of snacks to balance out all the alcohol. Snacks like nuts, olives, cheese, charcuterie, and carbs are your friends here. Play some jazz or lounge music in the background, and make sure you have plenty of water available for everyone.
Please make sure everyone stays safe by planning out transportation ahead of time!
6. Dessert and Champagne Soirée
Who says you need a full meal to throw an amazing party? A dessert-focused evening with some bubbly is way less stressful than coordinating a multi-course dinner. And you still get to eat sweets and drink champagne!
How to Do It
I say go full glam. Get gold flatware, crystal or champagne-colored accents, silk or satin table runners, and lots of candles in varying heights.
Create a stunning dessert table as your centerpiece with tiered stands with everything from macarons and mini cheesecakes to chocolate-covered strawberries and petit fours.
Set up a champagne bar with different bottles at various price points (prosecco is your budget-friendly friend here), plus mixers like elderflower liqueur, fruit purees, and fresh berries. This way everyone can DIY their own champagne cocktails.
If you want to be extra fancy, add edible flowers.
7. Game Night Extravaganza
You can also turn Valentine's Day into a full-on game competition. Board games, card games, video games, or even lawn games if you have outdoor space. A little friendly competition never hurt anybody...
How to Do It
Keep the decor fun and casual since the games are the main event. It’s super simple, just set up different game stations around your space. Use folding tables if you need to, and cover them with red and pink tablecloths so it’s all Valentine's themed.
Create a snack stadium with easy-to-grab finger foods that won't interfere with gameplay. Set up sliders, wings, pizza rolls, veggie cups, and candy bowls at each station. For drinks, do a self-serve situation with a cooler of beverages or a big batch cocktail in a drink dispenser.
Make trophy awards out of construction paper or grab some funny ones from a party store for winners of each game. Set up a scoreboard to track victories throughout the night, and maybe have a grand prize for the overall champion.
Be sure to have games for different group sizes in case you all want to split up.
Bonus Idea: Rom-Com Movie Marathon
Set up your living room like a boutique movie theater, queue up the most quotable romantic comedies ever made, and settle in for a night of laughing. And probably a little bit of happy crying too...
How to Do It
You’re going for comfy cozy here, so bring out every pillow, blanket, and cushion you own. Dim the lights and use string lights or candles to create ambient lighting that won't interfere with the screen.
Pop multiple flavors of popcorn (regular, cheddar, caramel, or even truffle), put out candy in glass jars like at an old school theater, and create a hot chocolate or coffee bar for later in the night.
You could even print little "movie tickets" as invitations or hand them out when your guests arrive.
Set up a ballot where everyone votes on which movie to watch next. Make it interactive by playing drinking games based on rom-com tropes, take a sip every time someone runs through an airport, there's a makeover scene, or two people get caught in the rain.
