The Self-Love Vision Board That Starts with You

I want to talk about you. By that, I mean you loving you. That’s self-love!
Skip what you see on social media. This isn’t the “treat yourself” version. Although I’m always down for a trip to the spa.
I mean the real kind, the self-love the kind that changes how you move through your life.
And one of my favorite ways to reconnect with it is a vision board, specifically a self-love vision board. It might be different from the typical vision board you’ve come across, so I think it’s important to note what it is (and what it isn’t).
First, Let's Clear Up What Self-Love Is
I find that self-love has a bit of a PR problem. Somewhere along the way it became synonymous with spa days (again, not knocking this!), scented candles, and spending lots and lots of money.
Yes, I love a good candle as much as anyone. But that's only scratching the surface.
Self-love is how you relate to yourself. It's the ongoing practice of treating yourself with the same patience, grace, and respect you'd give someone you genuinely care about.
It's setting boundaries and not needing to apologize for them. It's when you let yourself rest without earning it first. It's choosing things (e.g., jobs, relationships, habits) that are good for you…even when something else is more comfortable or familiar.
Misconception about Self-Love
I think it's also worth naming a few things self-love gets confused with.
Self-love and selfishness are two very different things
Caring for yourself makes you a better friend, partner, and human overall. It tends to multiply outward.
Self-love is trusting that you deserve to be you
It simply means you can take up space, exactly as you are, without needing to shrink for anybody else.
Self-love is a practice (not a destination)
Life’s a journey, right? Some days self-love comes easily. Some days it's harder to come by. Both are completely ok!
Self-love is unconditional
This one's big. You always have it. No qualifications required.

Your Relationship with Yourself Changes Everything
Do you ever think about your relationship with you? Sounds odd at first. But think about how you talk to yourself when you make a mistake. Whether you ask for what you need in relationships.
What you're willing to accept as “normal.” What you believe you deserve — in your career, in your friendships, in your daily life.
When that relationship is shaky, (like an overly critical inner voice) it spills into your life.
Self-compassion (a.k.a. self-love) is linked to lower anxiety, better relationships, and even higher motivation. Because when you're operating from a place of genuine care for yourself, you have more opportunities to grow.
So yes, self-love is foundational.
Self-Love Vision Board vs. Regular Vision Board
You've probably seen a traditional vision board before. Maybe you've made one. Awesome!
They're usually filled with big goals. Dream home, career milestones, travel destinations, a fit body, financial freedom. I think these are all great things to work toward.
But here's the difference. A traditional vision board is largely about what you want to have or achieve.
A self-love vision board is about who you want to be and how you want to feel.
The focus is more inward instead of outward.
Instead of “I want a two-story beach house,” it might be "I want peace and freedom."
Instead of “I want to lose 20 pounds,” it might be “I want to feel at home in my body.”
A self-love vision board also makes room for things that aren’t usually on a typical vision board.
Things you crave like rest, joy, boundaries, healing, , confidence, creative expression. Things that are harder to photograph but are just as important. Maybe more so.
I also believe that a self-love vision board is more personal. It's less about what looks aspirational and more about what's true for you right now.
How to Make One a Self-Love Vision Board
Now it’s time to make one! The good news is you need very few supplies, and zero artistic ability. Here's how I recommend approaching it…
1. Start with some quiet time
Before you touch a single magazine or open Pinterest (I know, it’s soo tempting), sit with a few questions. Grab your journal if you’d like.
- How do I talk to myself when I'm struggling?
- What parts of my life fit who I really am?
- What do I need more in terms of peace, joy, and connection?
- What’s it like when I'm at my best?
- What beliefs about myself am I ready to release?
Take your time with this. It's easy to fill a board with pretty images that are vaguely aspirational but carry little personal meaning. This kind of reflection makes the board yours.
2. Choose your format
I always love a physical board. There's something satisfying about cutting things out and placing them by hand, and it ends up somewhere you can see it.
A digital vision board works just as well if that's more your style.
If you go physical, you'll need a poster board or large piece of cardstock, magazines, scissors, glue, and optionally some markers or pens for words and affirmations.
3. Gather your images and words
This is where it gets fun! As you're flipping through magazines or searching for images, pay attention to how things make you feel, beyond how they look.
Look for images that represent:
- How you want to feel in your body
- The kind of vibe you want in your home, relationships, and work
- Periods of rest, play, and joy, alongside productivity
- Women who remind you of your own strength or beauty
- Nature, colors, or materials that bring you joy
Pull words and phrases too. Affirmations, quotes, captions, you name it.
4. Get organized
When it comes to layout, I recommend trusting your instincts. Group things that are related. Leave some space though! Things that are most important tend to be at the center.
Every arrangement is the right one. If something seems off, move it. It’s your board after all!
5. Add something personal
Once your images are placed, consider adding a few handwritten elements. Like your name, a line from your favorite song, a compliment you received that swept you off your feet.
6. Put it somewhere you'll see it
Once it’s done, now it’s time to hang it proudly! Put it next to your bathroom mirror, on your bedroom wall, over your desk. You get the idea.
A self-love vision board that’s hidden at the back of the closet kind of defeats the purpose of it being visible.
Be proud of your work and the transformation ahead of you!

Make It Whenever, Make It Often
The great thing about a self-love vision board is that you can make one of these at any point in your life. In fact, I think the best time to make a self-love vision board is when things are a bit unclear, or when you’re in a time of transition.
If you’ve outgrown one, what a great opportunity to make another one. No rules!
Have fun with it and with loving your wonderful, amazing self.
