For me, self-care is a way to be bold, joyful, and awake. It’s doing things that allow me to be present in all aspects of my life.
Perhaps your self-care routine has gotten a little bit…stale. I can only handle so much of a vanilla scented candle day after day.
Well, the good news is that there are so many fresh, exciting ways to take care of yourself that go beyond the basics. I’d recommend picking one or two to try this week and seeing how they change you for the better.
Let’s get to it!
Try Mini Adventures Close to Home
You don’t need a plane ticket to experience something new. Plan mini adventures right where you live. Explore a neighborhood you’ve never visited. Go to a different coffee shop. Or even wander through a local museum. Even a short walk in an unfamiliar park is more than enough.
Why it works: Novelty inspires creativity and breaks the cycle of same-old routines. Think of it as a mini reset button for your brain.
A Flexible Morning Routine Menu
Instead of following a strict routine, create a menu of morning activities you can mix and match depending on your mood. Maybe it’s a quick stretch, a big glass of water with lemon, your favorite playlist, or 10 minutes in the sun.
The flexibility keeps it from feeling forced, while the variety keeps things fresh. I’d recommend starting with something feasible that’s easy to stick with. Even a couple of minutes of a new activity can change the tone of your whole day.
Give Your Senses Some Love
Once a week, give yourself one uninterrupted hour dedicated purely to your senses. That could mean trying a new candle scent (sorry vanilla!), enjoying a fresh bouquet of flowers, putting on silk pajamas, or plating your lunch like it’s being served in a five-star restaurant. Even if it’s a grilled cheese sandwich.
Move Your Body…Outside
If you’re already moving your body, take it outside whenever (and wherever) you can. Hiking, paddleboarding, a beach walk, or outdoor yoga. These are all examples of activities for your physical health that also have a calming effect.
Being in nature lowers stress hormones and boosts energy naturally. Even an hour outdoors can make a huge difference in how vibrant and clear-headed you feel for the rest of the day.

Make Time for People Who Fill You Up
Myth busting time. Self-care means solitude. Wrong! In fact, the people you connect with can play a huge role in how supported and energized you feel. Schedule some time with those who make you laugh, inspire you, or simply feel easy to be around.
This could be a monthly dinner club, a standing coffee date, or even a quick FaceTime. The idea is to make it regular enough that your calendar always has something to look forward to.
Create Just for Fun
There’s a kind of joy that comes from making something just for the sake of making it. Carve out time to paint, collage, free-write, or bake. Remove the pressure of trying to produce something good or high quality. Your giving your brain permission to have fun with these creative outlets.
If you’ve been feeling stuck or uninspired with an aspect of your life, I’d recommend giving this a try.
Take a Break from the Electronics
Yes, technology is amazing. But being plugged in all the time connection can leave you feeling drained. Build in pre-planned tech-free windows. You might choose a no-phone morning once a week or commit to keeping evenings screen-free after 8 p.m. You’ll be alright!
Pair these breaks with offline activities. Read a book, write in a journal, take a walk, or handwrite a letter to a friend. Disconnecting from digital noise makes it easier to reconnect with yourself.
Do a Monthly Check-in
Once a month, take inventory of what, and who, is taking up your energy. Make a quick two-column list: one side for things that recharge you and one for things that leave you drained.
From there, look for ways to reduce or restructure the draining items and add more of the positive ones. This kind of self-awareness can make your whole schedule feel lighter.
